  1. 1883-1945. French right-wing politician. He
  2. was prime minister and foreign secretary
  3. 1931-32, and again 1935-36. In World War II
  4. he joined Petain's Vichy government as
  5. vice-premier June 1940; dismissed Dec 1940,
  6. he was reinstated by Hitler's orders as head
  7. of the government and foreign minister 1942.
  8. After the war he was executed. Laval, born
  9. near Vichy, entered the chamber of deputies
  10. 1914 as a Socialist, but after World War I
  11. moved towards the right. His second period as
  12. prime minister was marked by the Hoare-Laval
  13. Pact for concessions to Italy in Abyssinia.
  14. His share in the deportation of French labour
  15. to Germany during World War II made him
  16. universally hated. When the Allies invaded he
  17. fled the country, but was arrested in
  18. Austria, tried for treason, and shot after
  19. trying to poison himself.
